Welcome to our profile! We are John and Rebecca, and we understand that you have a difficult decision before you. We hope these pages and photos will help you get to know us a little. We both come from families built through adoption, and we want to share the love and joy we have experienced in our own families with a child. Thank you for taking the time to read about us.
John is a college professor, and Rebecca is a published writer and creative writing professor who has now stepped away from full-time teaching in order to be home for a child. We love working with young people, and we can’t wait to have a family of our own.
What binds us is the way we both try to move through the world with honesty, loyalty, thoughtfulness, hard work, and a lot of love. Our home is our center, a place for shared meals and much laughter, but we also like to get outside and explore, from neighborhood walks and bike rides to adventures in other countries.
Family is everything to us, and we spend a lot of time with both of our families. We even have a family pizzeria, and we are related to Santa, aka John’s uncle, who has been Santa for his company for years! Our extended family is very eager to be involved in the life of our future child.
About Rebecca, by John
Rebecca is a caring and earnest teacher and friend. She is generous and loyal and always helps people around her, and her friends know they can count on her and trust her. Rebecca is very smart- she’s a big reader as well as a talented writer- but she's also a goofball and she can be incredibly silly and fun.
She loves to cook and bake and to open up our home to family and friends for holidays or just because, and she is always planning trips and fun outings for us.
Most of all, though, Rebecca is loving. Our child will know they are loved deeply.
About John, by Rebecca
John is the most loving, patient, and generous man I have ever met.
He loves animals, and one of my nicknames for him is the Cat Whisperer because stray cats always follow him: they can tell that he is kind. John is admired and respected by his students, and he is always making them laugh. When I see him with them, I know what a wise and strong father he will be.
John is also the kind of man who will drop everything if you need him, and he always gives whatever he has to those he loves. He'll even give you the last cookie! He works hard, but he always has time for his family. He is a devoted grandson and son, and I know he will always put our child first.
Our Community and Our Family Plan
Because John is a full-time professor with a very flexible schedule, and Rebecca teaches very part-time and writes at home, we will be able to coordinate our schedules so that one of us can always be home with our child.
We carefully chose the town we now live in as part of our adoption plan. We live in an outstanding school district and our neighborhood is a safe and diverse community that is popular with many adoptive families. We have the best of the city and the suburbs here. We are a short walk to schools, the public library, and shops, and our home is right near a park. We are also only minutes away from downtown Chicago and all it has to offer, including the zoo, museums, and concerts in the park.
We will be able to provide a child with an excellent education, from grade school to college, and to provide them with opportunities to explore who they are, whether through art or music or dance classes, or through participating in theatre or sports, or through whatever activities or clubs they might become interested in as they grow. We want to show them the world, and we are prepared to give them the foundation to find and follow their own dreams.
Openness and Diversity
We were unable to conceive a child of our own, but we also choose adoption because we both come from diverse families enriched by adoption. John's Mom and Dad aren't his biological parents, and John's little brother was adopted from Peru. Rebecca's mother was also adopted by Rebecca’s very loving grandparents. We love them all fiercely, and we know firsthand that families are built from such love, and from shared experiences, and that families can take many different forms.
We both come from diverse families– Rebecca’s grandfather was Filipino and of course John’s brother is from Peru– and we understand the importance of a child knowing where they come from. Our community of friends is very diverse thanks to the work we do, and we are life-long learners, ready to both teach and learn with our child.
We look forward to celebrating our child’s multiple heritages from both birth and adoptive families. We will empower our child to fully explore the uniqueness of their identity, through everything from the books and music we introduce them to, to the communities and events we all participate in together. We are committed to helping our child feel at home in every sense of the word.
We believe in open adoption and allowing a child’s life to be full of both love and honesty. We want to work with you to build an adoption plan you feel comfortable with, ranging from sending you photos and updates to planning visits.
Thank you so much for reading about us and for considering us as adoptive parents. We hope we get a chance to meet you and talk to you more. And we wish you all the best as you navigate this difficult decision.
