Colleen & Adam

After meeting while working in the cafeteria in college, we have been together for twelve years.  As a family, we love to travel, spend time with our family and friends, and take our dog on long walks.  Growing up, we both knew we wanted to be parents, however, after we were married, we learned that biological children might not be possible for us.  With this in mind, we began exploring adoption as a means to build our family and adopted Jordan through The Cradle in 2017.  We are excited to be expanding our family once again!

Our Story

When we were attending the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, we both found ourselves needing a part-time job in the spring semester of 2007.  Since the residence hall cafeterias were almost always hiring and offered the promise of free meals, we both signed up for a few shifts.

While we ended up working the same shift that semester, we did not meet each other until the following fall when we, yet again, happened to sign up for the same Saturday night shift.  Can you say fate?!

We were assigned to work the checker stands, and since we were standing two feet from each other, began making small talk.  Colleen soon learned that Adam loved all things movies and television and soon found herself watching some of his favorite shows just so she would have something to talk to him about the next week.  Adam, noticing that Colleen giggled at nearly everything, found himself making up games with ridiculous rules for them to play to pass the time.  As the semester wore on, we became better and better friends and realized there might be something there.

The following semester, we, yet again, signed up for the same cafeteria shift, only this time, we did it on purpose!  A few weeks after the semester began, Adam asked Colleen on their first date - dinner and a movie ("Juno," in case you were wondering!).

Neither of us had been in a serious relationship before, so we were both nervous.  The date went well and was soon followed by a second, third, and fourth date in the weekends to come. The rest, as they say, is history!

We got married on the five year anniversary of our first date, added Baxter to our family the following summer, and brought Jordan home in the Spring of 2017.

Colleen is a former high school English teacher and educational technology coach.  She now works from home as a remote learning specialist, creating resources and programs to support parents and caregivers across the state of Illinois during remote and hybrid learning.  She loves all things new and techy, but her passion lies in being outside and getting active.  Her favorite hobbies are swimming, biking, running, and yoga (she’s a triathlete!).  When she is not doing that, she is most likely working on her next craft project or watching one of her favorite shows (“Bob’s Burgers” and “The Good Place”).  Her favorite foods are pizza and tacos and her favorite music is Lizzo (who she claims to have liked before it was cool!).  According to Colleen, the best part of being a parent is watching your kids discover something new for the first time!

Adam works from home as a compliance analyst for a Chicago-based bank, making sure his company is up to date with the constantly changing banking laws. He is also an avid consumer of movies, TV, and pop culture and publishes a blog where he loves to discuss and debate the shows he is currently watching. When it comes to his favorites, they are all classics: favorite music is The Beatles, Nirvana, and Kanye West, favorite shows are “Breaking Bad” and “Seinfeld,” and his favorite food is anything Chinese.  He grew up playing the drums and still plays with friends once in a while – one of his favorite things to do is play his drum set with Jordan.  Adam’s favorite thing about being a parent is being able to talk to Jordan and have conversations with him.  He always has something interesting to tell us!

Jordan was adopted through The Cradle in April 2017 and is your typical three (almost four!) year old who loves his bike and all things cars, trains, and trucks.  He is constantly moving from the moment his feet hit the ground in the morning.  His new favorite thing is to ask “Why?” – he is so curious and always trying to understand how things work!  He graduated from speech therapy last year and was thriving in preschool before the pandemic.  We live in one of the best school districts in the state and are excited to enroll him in their four-year-old program next school year.  We can’t wait to watch him become the loving, caring, and playful big brother we know he will be!

While he may not remember it, we have been talking to Jordan about adoption since he came home!We work hard to make sure that Jordan can see himself in the books on our bookshelf and the toys in his toy box, making sure they reflect diverse characters and are adoption positive. In fact, if you ask him, he will proudly announce “I’m ‘dopted!”

We are also dedicated to maintaining an open adoption with Jordan's birth parents and communicate with his birth mother regularly via email and text message, sending pictures, videos, and updates. His birth parents are always an important part of his story and Jordan can point his birth mother out in pictures and knows her by name.We are hoping to meet in person soon.

We are also excited about the opportunity to build an open relationship with our next child's birth parents. We know that "open" can mean different things to different people and that our relationship with Jordan's birth parents will most likely look different than our relationship with you.We look forward to collaborating with you to build a relationship that we are all comfortable with.
